“International Business: Opportunities and Challenges in a Flattening World” v5.0 Covers Trade Wars, Supply Chain Disruption, and the Emerging Markets of the Gulf and Africa

FlatWorld is pleased to announce International Business: Opportunities and Challenges in a Flattening World v5.0, published in September 2026.

Author Sanjyot P. Dunung is CEO and founder of Atma Global and a Professor of Practice at Thunderbird School of Global Management. A social scientist and serial entrepreneur, she leads a company that helps people and institutions make sense of a rapidly changing world.

Dunung wrote International Business to pair the field’s foundational concepts with the practical judgment global professionals use every day. “Most international business books are like global maps in a book, coupled with encyclopedias of international business terms and concepts,” she writes in the preface. Her textbook “focuses on how international business actually works in practice.”

Version 5.0 updates every chapter for the effects of recent geopolitical disruptions, trade wars, and the global pandemic on supply chains, business operations, strategic and scenario planning, and entrepreneurship. New and refreshed examples feature businesses of every size and stage from across the world, and Atma Insights streaming videos, produced by Dunung’s own firm, are embedded throughout.

Applied Insight Alongside Foundational Theory

International Business blends foundational concepts with applied insight drawn from real-world experience. The textbook covers the maps, key concepts, and essential information of the field, then gives students the frameworks and strategies to apply that information as international market conditions shift.

“Knowledge matters, but the ability to interpret complexity, assess risk, and act decisively matters more,” Dunung writes.

Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the Core

Strategy and entrepreneurship anchor the textbook. Dunung describes strategy as concerned with competition and competitive advantage, and entrepreneurship as concerned with creating opportunities where none previously existed. Tips in Your Professional Toolkit features turn complex concepts into steps students can apply inside a global organization.

The textbook speaks to technologically savvy students who, in Dunung’s words, “see national borders as bridges and not barriers.” Its aim is to prepare students to launch, run, and work in any organization that is global in scope, including domestic firms facing international competition. For students with a venture of their own in mind, Dunung writes, “international business increases your entrepreneurial playground.”

Emerging Markets from the BRICs to the Gulf and Africa

Version 5.0 updates coverage of each traditional BRIC economy (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) and adds the newer emerging markets of the Gulf and Africa. Local cultural insights from every region appear throughout, paired with practical applications for global professionals and firms.

Global Disruption, Analyzed as It Unfolds

Version 5.0 prepares students for a business environment shaped by artificial intelligence, digital platforms, trade disputes, climate risk, pandemics, and armed conflict. The textbook traces how those forces affect supply chains, investment decisions, customer access, and organizational resilience. Dunung wrote the new edition to teach students to read the signals and understand their implications for the organizations they may one day work at.

Atma Insights Videos Embedded Throughout

Atma Insights is an award-winning streaming video service developed by Dunung’s firm, Atma Global, which was named to Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies list. Its videos cover culture, countries, business, and global topics for professionals, educators, and students.

Version 5.0 embeds 72 videos in the textbook to reinforce chapter concepts and connect them to real-world situations.
