Engagement tools in every chapter

FlatWorld Interactive Activities

Ungraded and low stakes, encouraging students to engage the material instead of scrolling past it. Nothing to set up and nothing for you to grade.

  • Built into the chapter, not a separate platform
  • No second login and no extra setup

Built into FlatWorld's newest editions.

FlatWorld Interactive Activities are ungraded checkpoints built into the chapters of FlatWorld textbooks. Students answer multiple-choice knowledge checks, type the missing term into a sentence from memory, work through guided questions and, where an activity offers it, export their responses as a Word document, and complete self-assessments, all without leaving the chapter.

For students

Encourages Engagement, Chapter by Chapter.

Interactive Activities are part of the chapter, so students answer directly inside the reading experience, rather than needing to log into another platform.

  • Everything Happens Right on the Page.

The activity sits in the chapter itself. Students never leave the page they are on.

  • Answers Come Back Right Away.

Students check their work as they go and see which items they missed before moving on.

  • Ungraded, so Guessing Costs Nothing.

No activity counts toward a grade. Students can guess, check, and retry without limit.

Four Ways Students Test Their Understanding.

Each one asks for something different: recognition, recall, written response, and self-reflection.

Multiple-Choice Knowledge Checks.

Several questions sit inside the chapter. Students pick an answer, check it, and move to the next question. At the end they get their score, with the option to see the solution or retry.

Recall, Not Recognition.

Students type the missing term into each sentence rather than picking it from the list of terms above. That is a deeper cognitive task, and active retrieval is one of the most effective ways to strengthen retention. One check marks every blank at once, so a wrong answer sits visibly next to the ones that were right.

Guided Questions They Can Export.

Students work through several pages of prompts, typing their own responses as they go. An export step turns those responses into a Word document.

Self-Assessments Without Right Answers.

Some chapters include a self-check rather than a quiz, like a motivation scale students rate one statement at a time. The scale ends with a summary of where they stand. Which self-assessments appear depends on the title.

  1. 0:00Hi there and welcome.
  2. 0:01In this video, I want to take you inside the flatworld e-reader and walk you through some of the interactive activities we've built into our newest editions.
  3. 0:09These activities live directly inside the reading experience.
  4. 0:13Students don't leave the page, don't need to log into another platform.
  5. 0:17And won't deal with any extra setup.
  6. 0:19Everything happens right where they're already reading.
  7. 0:21These are not graded exercises.
  8. 0:23These are engagement tools, checkpoints woven into each chapter that keeps students actively involved in the material rather than passively scrolling through it.
  9. 0:33So let's take a look.
  10. 0:34First, you'll see multiple choice knowledge checks embedded throughout each chapter.
  11. 0:38As students work through the material, they can test their understanding right in the reading and get immediate feedback on whether they've grasped the key concepts.
  12. 0:47You'll also find fill in the blank exercises throughout the chapters.
  13. 0:50These work a bit differently because instead of selecting from a list, students have to recall the answer on their own.
  14. 0:57That's a deeper cognitive task, and the research is consistent on this.
  15. 1:01Active retrieval is one of the most effective ways to strengthen retention.
  16. 1:05They're ungraded and low stakes, built right into the flow of reading.
  17. 1:09Next, we have guided Q and A activities where students work through a structured set of prompts, reflection questions, application scenarios, and similar exercises, and enter their responses directly in the e-reader.
  18. 1:22When they're finished, they can export everything as a document.
  19. 1:26Which gives them something tangible to bring to class, use as a study resource or reference later.
  20. 1:32It turns reading from a passive task into preparation that carries forward.
  21. 1:36And one last example of our interactive activities is the motivation thermometer.
  22. 1:41This is a self-assessment tool where students check in on where they stand, how motivated they're feeling, how confident they are with the material.
  23. 1:48It's not measuring knowledge, it's building self-awareness.
  24. 1:52And for students who may be disengaged but can't quite articulate why.
  25. 1:55That kind of reflection can be the thing that shifts their trajectory.
  26. 1:59Now, this particular tool is unique to this book, but it's a good example of the kinds of self-assessments you'll find woven into titles across our catalog.
  27. 2:07So that's a look at what's happening inside the Flat World e-reader.
  28. 2:11All of it is seamless, all of it is low friction, and all of it is designed to turn reading into something students are actively doing rather than just getting through.
  29. 2:20Thank you for watching this walkthrough of Flat World's interactive engagement activities.

For instructors

Built In, with Nothing to Assign.

The activities ship inside the titles you adopt. There is nothing for you to build, schedule, or grade.

  • Already in the Chapters You Assign.

Activities come with the title you adopt, and they are in place chapter by chapter.

  • Checkpoints, Not Assessments.

Nothing is submitted. Nothing is scored toward a grade. No deadline to manage.

  • Work Students Can Bring to Class.

Some activities end with an export: a Word document the student can print.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are FlatWorld Interactive Activities?

FlatWorld Interactive Activities are ungraded checkpoints built into the chapters of FlatWorld textbooks. They include multiple-choice knowledge checks, fill-in-the-blank recall questions, guided question sets, many of which students can export as a Word document, and self-assessments. Students work through all four in the chapter itself.

  • Are interactive activities graded?

No. They are checkpoints, not assessments. Nothing a student does in an activity is submitted or scored toward a grade, which is why students are free to guess, check, and retry.

  • Do students need a separate login or another platform?

No. The activities run inside the FlatWorld textbook, in the chapter students are already working through. There is no second platform to join and no extra setup.

  • Do instructors have to assign or set up the activities?

No. The activities come with the title you adopt and are already placed in the chapters. There is nothing to build, schedule, or grade.

  • Can students retry an activity?

Yes. Activities offer a retry, and many also offer a way to show the solution after students have checked their answers.

  • Can students keep what they wrote in an activity?

Many guided question sets include an export step that turns a student's responses into a Word document. Students can save the document as a study reference or bring it to class.

  • Which FlatWorld titles include interactive activities?

Interactive activities are built into FlatWorld's newest editions. Which activities appear varies by title, since they are written for the chapters they sit in.
